Tour the Museum

The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art has new resources available to help art teachers arrange field trips to the museum during the 2006-2007 school year. Art teachers may request bus transportation and substitute teacher subsidies by contacting the Education Department. School Tour funds are limited and are dispersed on a first-come, first-served basis; preference is given to urban and rural schools with limited funds and to schools that serve students who are economically disadvantaged.

The 2006-2007 School Tour Program has been generously supported by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The mission of the institute is to grow and sustain a nation of learners through its grants, research, publications, and public discussions. Special support has also been provided by the American Girl Fund for Children. Additional funds have been provided by the Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission with funds from The Evjue Foundation, the Madison Community Foundation, and the Overture Foundation; the Alliant Energy Foundation; Macy’s; UW Health; Physicians Plus; James and Sylvia Vaccaro; and the Theda Clark Smith Family Foundation.

MMoCA's tour program has a reputation for providing high-quality, lively, question-driven experiences for groups of students and adults that focus on critical and creative thinking through observation, analysis, and interpretation of original works of art. Docents at MMoCA are adept at engaging a variety of age groups with modern and contemporary art. Groups of 10 to 75 people may schedule a guided tour of the museum.

Call the Education Department at 608.257.0158 or email sheri@mmoca.org to schedule a guided tour or to request a self-guided visit of MMoCA's exhibitions. Please schedule guided tours at least three weeks in advance of the desired date. Exceptions to this timeline may be arranged upon consultation with Education Department staff. For answers to frequently asked questions about tours, go to School Tours FAQs.

Teaching kits are available and contain biographical information, analysis of artworks, pre- and post-visit discussion topics, interdisciplinary lesson ideas, and illustrations of a representative selection of the art on view in the museum.

All guided tours meet Wisconsin Model Academic Standards for visual arts. Tours may also be tailored to address social studies or language arts standards.
