Joe Wilfer II

Santiago Moix

1995

woodcut on paper

27" x 20"

Joe Wilfer was the director of the Madison Art Center from 1976 to 1980. He worked his way up from janitor to director all while getting his undergraduate and graduate degrees. Wilfer was also a master printer and a pioneer in papermaking and went on to establish the print workshop for Pace Editions in New York City. Santiago Moix created this print the same year Wilfer passed away from brain cancer at 51 years old. The tumor, visible in this woodcut, was at the back of his head and shaped like a bratwurst, which Wilfer said was just perfect for him—a proud Wisconsinite.
